What does Emanuele Crialese have to do with Lampedusa? For the few who do not know him, Emanuele Crialese is a Roman director of Sicilian origins. On wikipedia we read “Emanuele Crialese was born on 26 July 1965 in Rome to Sicilian parents. He studied at New York University, where he graduated in 1995. After filming several short films, he debuted with a feature film in 1997, Once We Were Strangers, an Italian-American co-production, financed by a producer who had noticed Crialese during his apprenticeship in the United States. Followed by the feature films Respiro and Nuovomondo, both set in Sicily, films that have met with considerable success with critics and audiences, especially abroad, especially in France. Nuovomondo is presented in the official competition at the Venice International Film Festival in September 2006, enjoying a great success with the public which earned it a special and not expected Silver Lion and the Italian nomination for the Academy’s best foreign film Award (Oscar Award) as well as three David di Donatello. His fourth feature, Terraferma, whose plot deals with illegal immigration from Africa to Italy, was presented at the 2011 Venice Film Festival where he was greeted with a standing ovation. The film was released in Italian theaters on September 7, 2011. In 2012 it won the Mario Monicelli Award for Best Director at Bari’s Bif & st for the film Terraferma.

Emanuele can be said to be Lampedusano of adoption, he stayed on the island for a few years and left after shooting the film Respiro con Valeria Golino, Filippo Pucillo and Veronica D’Agostino (actors of Lampedusa) and many other Lampedusa extras.
The film had some success with the public and we can certainly say that it was the first film shot and set in Lampedusa.
